Gaim 1.5

A newer version of Gaim is available.

Features

Publisher's description of Gaim 1.5

From Pidgin:

Gaim is a multi-protocol instant messaging client for Linux, BSD, MacOS X, and Windows. It is compatible with AIM (Oscar and TOC protocols), ICQ, MSN Messenger, Yahoo, IRC, Jabber, Gadu-Gadu, and Zephyr networks.

Gaim users can log in to multiple accounts on multiple IM networks simultaneously. This means that you can be chatting with friends on AOL Instant Messenger, talking to a friend on Yahoo Messenger, and sitting in an IRC channel all at the same time.

Gaim supports many features of the various networks, such as file transfer (coming soon), away messages, typing notification, and MSN window closing notification. It also goes beyond that and provides many unique features. A few popular features are Buddy Pounces, which give the ability to notify you, send a message, play a sound, or run a program when a specific buddy goes away, signs online, or returns from idle; and plugins, consisting of text replacement, a buddy ticker, extended message notification, iconify on away, and more.

Version 1.5.0 offers various account bug fixes and limited file transfer support.

Your mother uses AOL Instant Messenger. Your spouse prefers MSN. Your office insists on Yahoo. What are you going to do? You could run all those chat clients at once, or you could use Gaim. Like Trillian, Fire, and other third-party IM clients, this open-source messaging application lets you access multiple IM networks from one window. It supports all the big IM networks, plus lesser-known protocols such as Jabber and Gadu-Gadu. The chunky buddy-list icons won't be to everyone's taste, but you can choose sleeker ones by unchecking the Show buddy list icons box in the Preferences menu. We also recommend the Bluecurve skin (but if skinning's your thing, Trillian is probably a better choice). You may call it a minus or a plus, but Gaim doesn't do much beyond instant messaging. You'll find no IP telephony, no video conferencing, and--hallelujah!--no advertising. As for the rest, Gaim does everything an IM client should: send smileys (you can find tons of emoticons on the developer's site), transfer files, and join chats. The Buddy Pounce feature lets you automatically perform certain actions (play a sound, execute a command, open an IM window) when a contact signs on or off. Gaim also gets lots of intangibles right: logging and time-stamping, for instance, are well-executed and easy to access. If Gaim doesn't get our highest recommendation, that's only because it doesn't have as many features as other messengers and isn't quite as polished. However, if pure IM is your thing, Gaim may well be your best choice.
