- "Get to your PC, anywhere"
The name might be LogMeIn, but the motto should be SignMeUp.
The fact that it's free to use for multiple remote PCs, with reasonable monthly plans if you need more--five computers for $20 per month or $200 per year--makes this remote-access program instantly appealing. The program differs from its competitors in that the application runs in your Web browser. If you're running Firefox, it asks to install a plug-in and then opens an emulator of the remote PC in a new window. If you have a lot of tabs open, LogMeIn will slow down your browsing and possibly your CPUs clock speed a bit.
The control window gives you some standard options such as Ctrl-Alt-Del (which kills the connection) and changing the view settings, as well as tabbed access to adjust the connection setting. The 256-bit SSL encryption and dual passwords--one for the program and one for the remote PC's log-in--are welcome protections.
You must upgrade to take advantage of the file transfer and synchronization abilities, but creative users should be able to find ways around that restriction for small files. Still, for the functionality and the price, LogMeIn is an excellent program.

"Too complicated for the ordinary person."
Pros: Publisher's description sounds wonderful
Cons: I tried to follow instructions very carefully and selected "free version" when the choice came up in the complicated, many step installation procedure, but a trial version of a $$$$ version installed anyway. There were many questions that were left unanswered as to how to configure the program on a host and slave computer or how to set up and use it. I only have about 20 years experience using and building computers and I found this program way over my head so I uninstalled it after a couple of unfruitful hours of struggle and study. If you are not an IT professional, keep clear.

"This Is Pure Remote Access Magic"
Pros: There is no better solution for controlling computers remotely than LogMeIn, especially since the free version is really free for you to use forever. LogMeIn makes it easy to sign onto and control remote computers--anyone can do it, even someone who is not tech literate. You can add as many computers to your free account as you want, and your account will always be free. There is no setup, except installing a small file from the LogMeIn web site. LogMeIn needs to be installed on each computer you want to control, and you're ready to go. Despite weeks of research and labor, I was never able to achieve remote control of any computer with Norton PC Anywhere, which I paid $25 for. If you want to know how difficult it is to hack a computer behind a router, try using Norton PC Anywhere. It was totally useless. But once I tried LogMeIn, I was in right away, fixing my parents' PC remotely, and I was hooked. To top it off, it's totally secure, nobody eavesdropping on your connection. Once LogMeIn is installed on each machine you want to run, simply enable it, and then access the computer through the LogMeIn web site. You can control another computer just as if you were sitting in front of it, Mac or PC, even if it's behind a router. It's like magic. This is great for parents or people who are not tech literate. Just have them install LogMeIn on their machine. When it's time for support, you can call them up and tell them to enable the software, and then their part will be done. It can also be left on all the time. LogMeIn will even automatically reconnect you if the remote machine is restarted. Each machine needs a local access username and password, but that is simple. There is no need to subscribe to online services or buy expensive remote control software that requires an IT degree to figure out. LogMeIn does what you need for free. For basic remote control that works like a charm, you can't beat free, can you?
Cons: No chat support included, but here's the secret to working around that. Simply open a simple text document on the machine you're controlling, and you can type messages back and forth in there. Not as fancy, but essentially the same as chat. File sharing is a bit clumsy but works if you need it, which I rarely have. Premium features like remote audio are missing, but who really needs to listen to music from someone elses computer? LogMeIn put the right stuff in the free version and left most of the luxuries to the paid version.

Version: LogMeIn Free 4.0.667
Cons: Followed the instructions, seemed to install OK. Then I read that to control another computer, I did not need to install. Noticed it was set to run in the background all the time on my PC. Looked to uninstall, clicked on program, it tried to access the internet. There was not an uninstall option. Actually there was nothing. The program is apparently all online.
So I used Windows uninstall. That seemed to work, but still it wanted to open with my start up files. THEN I FOUND FIREFOX AND AOL NO LONGER WORKED. That was the last straw. Used a system restore point before the install and uninstall. That was successful (thank God).
