Version: O&O UnErase 4
Pros: All our recent company files just vanished one day. Checked the backups. Guess what - that scheduled service had been broken for a month for some reason. Ouch. Double whammy - no data. Fortunately we 1) spotted it immediately 2) had a blank disk to restore onto if anything went wrong (You should never restore direct onto the platter you are trying to recover if you can help it. That's a mug's game as it overwrites the data of the very files you are trying to unerase). I have full trial versions of O&O Disk Recovery and also Defrag from cover disks so trust the company way beyond no-names I haven't come across. The demo, like many similar will only show you what it thinks it can see. But why should you trust that when many competitors show things and then fail to resurrect them? ...Because it's made by O&O like I said, and their other things clearly work. I did a check to see if the files I wanted were there "in principle" and they were. So I paid up at that point and hit the button. EVERYTHING came back fine. And I mean our recent accounts, not a bunch of holiday snaps! This long review as you can probably tell is part of my thanks. The registration money doesn't seem enough given the mess I would have been in without a reliable undeleter.
(2) Works great on Windows 2003 servers. Some others I had a look at clearly don't like NTFS still! How wierd is that these days?
Cons: (1) DEMO DOES NOT UNERASE. Just shows you the files it thinks it can have a go at. Have confidence it does work if you then buy - where it can it will indeed undelete.
(2) The con with ANY unerase software is that if you spot the problem too late and have overwritten the part of the disk that held the unerased file you are always going to be in far bigger trouble. Unerasing is something that needs to be done as soon as possible after the file goes missing or that part of the disk appears free and Windows will write over it sooner or later. The older the delete the more luck you need.
(3) You might unerase a virus that your virus checker already deleted (known problem with ANY uneraser). Get files back. Then backup in case its your AV that deleted everything! Then run the Anti Virus for safety before you do anything else.
(4) It's best to unerase to an entirely seprate disk or memory key. This again is true of ANY undeleter.
