Skype is software that enables you to make free calls anywhere in the world in minutes. Created by the people who brought you Kazaa, Skype uses innovative P2P (peer-to-peer) technology to connect you with other users. It is quick and easy to install and offers several features, including SkypeOut calling from Skype to regular and mobile phones worldwide, free conference calling, and secure file transferring. Skype calls have better sound quality than your regular phone calls and are highly secure with end-to-end encryption.
The latest version offers higher video resolution for video chat and is now compatible with Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard. Version 2.7.0.330 includes unspecified updates.

- "Slash your long-distance bills"
Getting in touch with friends and family is easy with this Internet telephone software, but the functionality is conditional. Skype offers a graphically pleasing interface that's much like a chat program. To make calls, you'll need to create a contact list of friends and family or use the phone-like interface to dial people directly.
You also can access a pull-down menu for painless conference calls of up to four people. To make free calls, both parties will need to have the Skype software installed. To call regular phones, you'll need to sign up for a plan with SkypeOut, the developer's paid service that offers cheap by-the-minute calling. We like the intuitive chat-like interface of Skype and were surprised at the excellent sound quality, even using regular desktop speakers. Similar to a chat client, you can set your availability status, but we also would like to see a missed-call indicator or, better yet, some form of voicemail. Recently enhanced video chat makes face-to-face calls even better with a higher resolution and a larger viewing window for whoever you're talking to.
Overall, we think Skype is a strong contender in the Internet Telephony category, and anyone who's interested in talking for free or wants to experience video chat should give it a try. For international callers who have computers, this program is a no-brainer solution for long-distance bills.

"Great Promise, hard to get there"
Pros: My brother in Taiwan called me on skype and I was impressed by the sound quality, as good or better than any other phone service. So I downloaded it so I could call him back!
Cons: Then the fun did not begin. I found it very difficult to get to a place where I could make a call and have not gotten there yet. There seem to be many attempts to lure me into buying something despite the promise of 'free'. I will try again, I have advanced academic degrees and have been a Mac user since 1984 and yet this software is not so easy to use. I will try again...

Pros: I looked for several weeks to find a free program that would allow easy video conferencing between Mac and PC. Skype has worked perfectly and the video quality is fantastic.

Pros: Has everything pretty much....well you can call a person and speak to them and then type to them at the same time if you wish. Or call one person and type to another at the same time. Also has really cute emoticons like an emo guy, dancing figure, a man that bows and a teddy that gives hugs
