From Micromat:Among the features included in TechTool Pro 4 are S.M.A.R.T. testing to check for impending hard drive failure, email notification if problems are found by the configurable automatic diagnostics routines, optimization/defragmentation, and many other drive and hardware tests to help pinpoint computer problems. One of the most innovative features of TechTool Pro 4 is the eDrive.
An eDrive is a bootable Mac OS X emergency partition containing TechTool Pro. It is created on one of your computer's hard drives without the need to reformat it. If you have problems with your normal startup hard drive volume, you can boot the computer and run TechTool Pro from the eDrive. This allows for recovery and repair without the need to startup from the TechTool Pro CD. This feature is especially useful to notebook users because it negates the need to carry an emergency TechTool Pro CD while traveling. It also eliminates the need for a new CD when the program is updated. This version is the first release on CNET Download.com.

"This program SEEMS to do alot but you don't know WHAT it does"
Cons: I don't know IF it fixes anything or what it's doing other than checking stuff & it takes FOREVER.

Pros: TTP covers everything in one easy to use package, and comes wrapped in a handsome user interface.
Cons: Some of the warnings and error messages are somewhat obscure, especially for the UNgeek.

"Does everything easily in an all in one package"
Pros: Fast, easy to use interface. Does everything from checking hardware to testing the OSX file and volume structures. Also maintainenance of volume structure and defrags the disk. Creation of edisk to boot to in case of problems provides a way to repair
Cons: None really. For a very serious volume structure problem though, Disk Warrior might have to be employed as it is more comprehensive. However, this is all Disk Warrior does and it is pricier than TechTools pro. I've yet to need to use Disk Warrior.
Summary: Included with AppleCare if you purchase that. If you don't have that, its a valuable tool to have to help ensure your system is functioning at peak. However, backups remain critically important. I've seen too many people loose valuable data due to c... read more >>

"I haven't been able to open up techtool software since."
Pros: Not one thing.
Cons: Since it won't run, I don't like any of it.
Summary: I installed the update and then attempted to run updated software. A message appeared saying to reinstall from original disc. I do it and then update to 4.6.2 followed by trying to start up software. It again says to reinstall from original disc.

Cons: Don't know again - won't install on my G5 running Leopard.
