Editor's review

The Transfer is out to reinvigorate the garage-rock Mesopotamia that is their native Detroit. With a heavy dose of contemporary emo, the band has updated the original crunch of the Stooges and the MC5. The past has never sounded more like the future.

Biography

What is The Transfer? Rock. Two screaming Les Pauls plugged straight into Marshall half-stacks, and hook-filled melodies carried by a clear, strong, ringing voice. In the frigid month of January, 2001, The Transfer was formed by guitarist Justin Carls and singer Steve Tutor. The band cut their teeth with gigs at the Magic Stick, the Blind Pig, the Space and many more. In October 2001, The Transfer hit Woodshed Studios in Ferndale for their self-titled six-song demo. By early 2002, the songs were generating thousands of plays on MP3.com, helped by the band's constant live shows. July brought the addition of Jeff Nawrot, guitarist for the touring Detroit metal band Apathemy. With Jeff in the lineup, The Transfer headed back to Woodshed studios to record the full-length CD "Break the Lines." Two of those songs, "Break the Lines" and "Sink or Swim," hit #1 on the Michigan MP3.com chart. With the addition of drummer Steve Poirier and bassist Scott Sigler, The Transfer returned to Woodshed Studio in February of 2003 to record a four song EP which will be available later in 2003. The Transfer is a seasoned group that has played more than 100 shows in Michigan and surrounding states. The band is actively pursuing label support for a new record.
