The new Westminsters had better be careful; their "lo-fi" recordings are starting to feel dangerously professional. Luckily, just sounding good doesn't mean sounding slick. These tracks are indie pop at its bittersweet best, tough truths and small revelations all riding on a fine melody.
The Westminsters: a music project
It might sound like a band, but The Westminsters is predominantly a solo recording project based in a home studio in Brisbane, Australia.
After emerging bewildered from a short string of Brisbane bands (Young Eleanor, The Granite Lakes), Martin Macdonald singled out seven tracks that had been sitting around for some time looking forlorn, polished them up a little and released them as Some Reasonable Fiction in January 2008. For the launch and surrounding shows, The Westminsters fleshed out into a full band, though still fluctuating between a 3, 4 and 5 piece lineup.
As with all evolution, it may not be possible to accurately predict what's next to come. One thing's for sure though; there'll be new Westminsters tunes soon.
Some Reasonable Fiction is available now through iTunes.
